Filmi Jagat: A Scrapbook

Filmi Jagat A Scrapbook: Shared Universe of Early Hindi Cinema is a unique pre-Independence scrapbook and an intimate work that combines the immediacy of a private diary and the reflective distance of a carefully curated photo album. The book is a reproduction of the scrapbook in its entirety, and a discussion of the key elements that were so central to the expansion of cultural experience at the time – access to the world in the form of print artifacts such as literature and newspapers and media phenomena such as film and photography.

Debashree Mukherjee

Debashree Mukherjee is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Cinema Studies at New York University. Associate Editor with BioScope: South Asian Screen Studies, Debashree recently curated an exhibition titled Maya Mahal: An Enchanted Look at Hindi Cinema.

Kaushik Bhaumik

Kaushik Bhaumik is Associate Professor in Cinema Studies at the School of Art and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He recently guest edited the Marg Special Issue on 100 Years of Bombay Cinema and has written extensively on Hindi cinema.

Rahaab Allana

Rahaab Allana is Curator, Alkazi Foundation for the Arts, New Delhi and Editor, PIX: A Photography Quarterly. Apart from the Filmi Jagat scrapbook, the recently created Rahaab Allana Collection comprises film stills, lobby cards, song books and other memorabilia dating between the 1930s-80s.

Shyam Benegal

Shyam Benegal is an Indian director and screenwriter. With his first four feature films Ankur, Nishant, Manthan and Bhumika he was part of a new genre, which has now come to be called the “middle cinema” in India.
